Elsie Popkin Piece on Special Exhibit Aug. 17 - Sept. 25, 2010 Artworks Gallery is exhibiting a beautiful large pastel landscape done outdoors at Reynolda Gardens in W-S by the late well-known Winston-Salem artist, Elsie Dinsmore Popkin through the month of September. Framed in handsome gold wood, it has a foreground of brilliant pink canna flowers, backed by red and silver blue-green flora. Proceeds from the purchase of this piece will be shared with Piedmont Opera as a fundraiser. Elsie Dinsmore Popkin received her B.F.A. in painting from Cornell University. In 1975 she became the first Artist-in-Residence at Reynolda House Museum of American Art, in Winston-Salem, NC, and was named Winston-Salem Artist of the Year in 1989. Popkin had been a Fellow at Yaddo and at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. In June 2002 she was an Artist-in-Residence at Crater Lake National Park, as part of the Park’s centennial celebration. Her pastel paintings of views from the windows of Cornell’s Herbert F. Johnson Museum was the focus of her show at that museum in June 2003. She died in 2005. Popkin's pastel paintings are in many public and private collections and have been featured in numerous art books, including Creative Painting with Pastel, Pastel Solutions, and Collin's Artist's Manual. She is listed in Who's Who in American Art and Who's Who of American Women.
