Small Stories
Chris Flory and Betti Pettinati-Longinotti
March 1 - March 28, 2015
Reception, Gallery Hop, March 6, 7-10 PM.
Chris Flory thinks that all of her paintings tell a story, even though they are non-representational. The story might involve something the viewer finds in the image. It might be a matter of color and brushstrokes moving across the panel. Some, but not all, of the paintings, which are based on a grid, contain a different narrative in each section of the grid. The ending of the story is never what the artist expects when she begins a painting.
Flory was born in Philadelphia and received a BFA in Printmaking from Philadelphia College of Art (now University of the Arts) in 1972. She received her MFA in Painting from UNC-Greensboro in 1992. She has lived in Winston-Salem since 1988 and has been a member of Artworks Gallery since 1993.
With a desire to re-explore painting from observational study, Betti Pettinati-Longinotti’s body of work began to take shape. Matched with an intrigue to work further by allowing the works to evolve into a mixed media realm, a conceptual thread was conceived. Thus, Small Stories shares a body of conceptual still life, mixed media oil-based, paintings associating parallel experiences and the artist’s life as a muse, with a seduction of homage to other artists: Contemporary artist Jeff Barnum states it best, “Every artist is in dialogue.” This body of work allows the practice of re-exploring the pleasure of observation and learning ‘how to see’ when creating directly from life.
Betti Pettinati-Longinotti received her BFA from the Maryland Institute, College of Art and her MA from the University of the Arts in Philadelphia, in Art Education with a studio major in Glass. In June of 2014 she received her MFA in Visual Arts through the Art Institute of Boston at Lesley University.
The exhibit is free and open to the public.
