Nelida Otero Flatow and Alix Hitchcock

Meet the artists at the Gallery Hop, Friday, November 1, 7 - 10 pm

Artworks Gallery presents a two-person exhibit of large acrylic paintings of beach scapes by Nelida Otero Flatow and hand colored monoprints with figures in abstracted land and water environments by Alix Hitchcock.

Beach Yoga imageNelida Flatow was born in La Habana, Cuba, immigrated to the USA in 1961 as part of Operation Pedro Pan, lived in an Orphanage in Pueblo, Colorado for a year, then was reunited with her parents in New York City where she grew up. She graduated from Queens College CUNY, with a BFA, and studied Art with Mary Frank, Louis Finklestein, Rosemary Beck, Harold Bruder, Clinton Hill, Charles Cajori, and Tom Doyle. She studied at the Arts Students League and Parsons School of Design, printmaking with Krishna Reddy in NYC. She has a Master of Arts in Liberal Studies from Wake Forest University in 2006, and has attended Penland School of Crafts, NC; Haystack Mt School of Arts, Deer Isle, Maine; with Ron Pokrasso, Printmaker, at the Santa Fe College of Arts; and with Dan Welden, Printmaker, in Santa Fe, NM.

Ms. Flatow has shown at Salem College Fine Arts Center, SECCA, Davidson CC, Delta Art Center, Sawtooth Gallery, PS1 (Queens NY), and numerous other group shows. She is owner of Upton Street Atelier in Winston-Salem and works as a Bilingual Interpreter for WSFCS.

Alix Hitchcock received her MA in painting from New York University in1983, and her BFA in printmaking and painting from the Univ. of N.C. at Greensboro in 1973. She was an Instructor in Drawing at Wake Forest University from 1989 to Dec. 2012 when she retired. She was the Winston-Salem Artist of the Year in 1998, and is a founding board member of Artworks Gallery.

Hitchcock has exhibited widely in N.C., including Hawthorne Gallery, Salem College Fine Arts Gallery, Diggs Gallery, Delta Fine Arts Gallery, the Sawtooth Center’s Davis Gallery and Milton Rhodes Gallery in Winston-Salem, Green Hill Center for NC Art, The Center for Creative Leadership, and Weatherspoon Art Gallery in Greensboro, Meredith College and Lee Hansley Gallery in Raleigh, Appalachian State University in Boone, Center Gallery and Somerhill Gallery in Chapel Hill, and Central Piedmont Community College in Charlotte. In addition, she has been in shows in Kentucky, Virginia, South Carolina, New York City, and Wyoming.

Ms. Hitchcock’s art has been published in two textbooks: A Guide to Drawing, Eighth Edition by David Faber, and Digital Art, Its Art and Science by Yue-Ling Wong. Her work iis in many private collections as well as public collections such as the Kenan Institute for the Arts, Forsyth Memorial Hospital, Duke University Woman’s Clinic, Womble Carlyle Law Firm, Exclusive Furniture Development Inc., N.C. National Bank, Wachovia Bank, The Benefits Group, G.M. Volvo Heavy Truck Co., Twisted Paper Products, Wake Forest Baptist Health – Davie Medical Center, and Wake Forest University.
