Chris Flory and Nancy Hayes “New Paintings”
August 2 - 27, 2011
Reception: Friday, August 5, 7-10 p.m.
Artworks Gallery presents "New Paintings" by Chris Flory and Nancy Hayes.
Chris Flory paints in acrylic, with many thin, transparent layers on poplar panels. Her new work is based more on ideas than on things. Whatever the titles claim, the real subject of these paintings is paint. She was born in Philadelphia and has lived in Winston-Salem since 1988. She has a BFA in Printmaking from Philadelphia College of Art and an MFA in painting from UNC-Greensboro, and has been a member of Artworks Gallery since 1993.
Nancy Hayes' acrylic painting continues a line of artistic exploration of the animal kingdom and its interface with the modern world. Building on recent experiences with collage, she has constructed a series of scenes in which the animal subjects emerge boldly and starkly to interact with the viewer as though cut from the printed page. The stories surrounding the figures are often removed leaving only the figures, suspended in time and space. Only the interaction with the viewer and the other characters in the image remain. Ms. Hayes is from Atlanta, GA, received her BA in English Literature from the University of Georgia in 1962, and a BFA in Art Education from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro in 1989. In her twenties she expanded her experiences by living in northern Italy for 2 years. On return to the United States, she ultimately settled in Winston-Salem where she has lived since 1975.
The reception is Friday, August 5, from 7-10 p.m. during Gallery Hop.
The exhibit is free and open to the public.
