Mystery, Memory, and the Market
Nov. 2 - 27, 2010
Opening Reception: Sunday, Nov. 7, 2 - 4 pm
Artworks Gallery presents a three-person exhibit entitled "Mystery, Memory, and The Market," with Nelida Otero Flatow showing mostly encaustic wax on wood pieces, Alix Hitchcock showing encaustic wax on wood pieces, and Kimberly Varnadoe showing polaroid emulsion lifts.
Nel Flatow is a painter and printmaker. Besides one acrylic painting called "Citrus", she is showing encaustic wax paintings based on studies from the bountiful offerings of Italian Markets such as the Rialto in Venice and Testaccio in Rome where she recently traveled. Ms. Flatow has a BFA from Queens College, CUNY, and a MALS degree from Wake Forest University. She has attended workshops at the Penland School of Crafts in NC, Haystack Mt in Maine, and Making Art Safely Printmaking workshops in Santa Fe, NM.
Alix Hitchcock is showing encaustic wax on wood paintings. These pieces display mysterious imagery from various sources - Western Native American themes, natural elements, or abstracted narratives. Ms. Hitchcock teaches Drawing at Wake Forest University and was Winston-Salem Artist of the Year, sponsored by the Sawtooth Center for Visual Arts. She has a BFA from UNC-G and a MA in painting from New York University.
Kimberly Varnadoe is showing Polaroid emulsion lifts on paper, which are often presented layered and in muted tones. Her recent body of work is about memory, time, and mortality. She states: “Each of us moves through life with memories all our own. Those of us that experience the very same episode in life often recall the situation differently. I am fascinated with the blurry line between “perception” and ”reality” and the impact that dreams and memories have on our perception of reality.” Ms. Varnadoe is an Associate Professor of Art at Salem College. She received her M.F.A in Printmaking from The University of Memphis, and her BFA from The University of South Alabama.
The opening reception is Sunday, November 7, 2 - 4 pm. The exhibit will be open during the Downtown Arts District Gallery Hop, Friday, November 5.
The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
