Mary Blackwell-Chapman and Mona Wu

Artworks Gallery presents a two-person exhibit entitled, "New Bearings", with ceramic sculpture and handmade books by Mary Blackwell-Chapman, and work on paper by Mona Wu.

Mary Blackwell-Chapman's sculptures are figurative ceramics, and her handmade book forms incorporate clay, wood, paper, and objects from nature. Blackwell-Chapman continues to be interested in Story, "what the stories of our lives are and how we express them. These works reveal a new concern with looking, listening, engaging with our lives". The figurative works are realistic and the books are very abstract, although the titles reference specific places. The book bindings are traditional in their source, but Blackwell-Chapman has been very creative in presentation.

Ms. Blackwell-Chapman received a BA in English literature from Goucher College and an MA in Motion Picture from Northwestern University. She has studied sculpture at UNCG, Sawtooth Center of Art, Penland, and Arrowmont.

Mona Wu, a long time printmaker, has come full cycle in her art, going back to her cultural roots in Chinese art. In this show, the paintings are done in the traditional Chinese ink and watercolor style. However, some paintings are in a grid collage arrangement. Instead of presenting her paintings in a straightforward way, Mona cuts up the images into square tiles, then arranges them in a random manner, interspersing the painting tiles with fine calligraphy tablets. The result is a series of surprising compositions that invite closer investigation.

Mona Wu studied Chinese painting and calligraphy in Hong Kong before she came to the United States in 1970. She received her degree in Art History from Salem College in Winston-Salem in 1996. Since 1997 she has been studying printmaking under David Faber, Professor of Art, at Wake Forest University. Mona Wu was recognized as Winston-Salem Artist of the Year in 2003.

The opening reception is Sunday, July 11, 2 - 4 pm. The exhibit and reception are free and open to the public.
