“Planetary Expressions” by Virginia Ingram “Books from Home”by Mary Blackwell-Chapman Exhibit dates: September 2 - 27, 2008 Reception: Friday, September 5, 7 - 10 p.m.

Artworks Gallery is presenting a two-person exhibit: "Planetary Expressions," pastels on paper by Virginia Ingram, and "Books from Home," hand-made art books by Mary Beth Blackwell-Chapman.

Virginia Ingram is showing pastel pieces with images of the planets and the moon. She says "the night sky has been of great interest to me for as long as I can remember. The moon has become a great friend and has been a subject for much of my work. For this exhibit I plan to concentrate on "The Planets," the orchestral suite that Gustav Holst wrote in the first half of the 20th century. After hearing "The Planets" at the Stevens Center, I immediately thought I would try to put my ideas on paper."

Ms. Ingram received a BFA and MFA at UNC-G concentrating in printmaking and graphic art. After graduating she worked at Bowman Gray School of Medicine in Medical Art and later at UVA. She worked as a Book Designer at John F. Blair Publishing until she began freelancing graphic art. She now devotes her time to making art.

She exhibited with the Five Winston-Salem Printmakers at SECCA in 1983 and in Full Circle: A 40th Anniversary tribute to the Five W-S Printmakers. Other exhibits have been: Salem Fine Arts Gallery, 2001; Secca Collects, 2004, 2005; A Series of Woodblock prints, Salem College Fine Arts Gallery, 1999. She has work in many collections: Weatherspoon Gallery, UNCG; Jackson Library, UNCG; Duke University; Wake Forest University; Winston-Salem State University and many private collections. Ms. Ingram is an exhibiting member of Piedmont Craftsmen and Associated Artists of W-S. She was the 2004 Artist of the Year for the Sawtooth Center of Visual Art in W-S, NC.

Mary Beth Blackwell-Chapman is showing mixed media sculptures that are also books, continuing her exploration of personal and community history, language, and memory. They all began with an old wooden implement used in the home – washboards, level, dough bowl, show lasts. Some are wall mounted and some are free standing. Personal and cultural memory, and the power of story are recurrent themes in her work. She asks, "How do we as individuals and as a community reflect our history? What is the place of the artist in this dance that connects the past with the present? How do we tell stories without words, with visual art?"

Ms. Blackwell-Chapman is a native of and lives in Forsyth County, North Carolina. She earned a BA in English Literature from Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, and an MA in Motion Picture from Northwestern University in Chicago. She has exhibited annually since 1993 in juried and non-juried shows in North Carolina. She has also exhibited at the Broderson Gallery in Durham, NC, the Hickory Art Gallery, the Writer's Center in Bethesda, MD, and at the Longview Gallery in Raleigh, NC among many others. Her works are in collections in Virginia, West Virginia, Washington, D.C., North Carolina, Georgia, and France.

The opening reception is Friday September 5 from 7:00 – 10:00pm. It will coincide with the Gallery Hop held in the downtown W-S Arts District.

The exhibit is free and open to the public.
