Artist Statement: Colored Pencil As My Medium of Choice

Colored pencils can do things paints cannot. Most of us think that colored pencils are simply used to fill in areas of color for a drawing. It is their versatility, however, that I enjoy. The use of applying multiple layers can produce a translucent effect where the underlying layers glow through the upper layers. A sharp point on the pencil helps to depict fine, delicate detail. With a solvent, the wax or oils of colored pencils can be physically mixed together into a liquid and applied with a brush. Foggy effects can be made with gentle strokes. With heavy pressure, the colors will become deep and rich. Areas can be polished or burnished with a soft cloth to bring out an actual gloss. The longer you work with a medium, new techniques unfold; some of these may even be accidental. I also enjoy working in acrylics and sculpting with paper clay.
