Mary Blackwell-Chapman
UnSettled - Human Migration in the 21st Century Mary Blackwell-Chapman's show of ceramic and mixed media sculpture reflects her interest in the movement of people around the globe. Humankind has always been on the move, whether out of curiosity, social stress, political upheaval, war, or difficulties caused by climate change or weather. A predominant image in the show is the boat form, symbolic of an individual's precarious life journey, a family's uprooted home, a culture's loss and insecurity. The 21st Century has brought unprecedented human migration and displacement. What does it feel like to be a foreigner, a stranger?
Mary Blackwell-Chapman is a native of and lives in Forsyth County, North Carolina. She earned a BA in English Literature from Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, and an MA in Motion Picture from Northwestern University in Chicago.
Her works are in collections in Virginia, West Virginia, Washington, D.C., North Carolina, Georgia, and France. She has exhibited annually since 1993 in juried and non-juried shows in North Carolina, and is a member of Artworks Gallery and Associated Artists in Winston-Salem. She and her husband live in rural Forsyth County and enjoy three grown children and two granddaughters.
Seth Moskowitz
Southeast by Southwest - Winston-Salem and Santa Fe “Southeast by Southwest” is a nonexistent, paradoxical compass point that explores the (dis)similarities of the geographic and emotional landscapes he encountered while living in North Carolina and New Mexico. In many ways, Winston-Salem and Santa Fe exist on different planes, but both find strong, and sometimes similar, resonance and expression in Moskowitz’s art.
Seth Moskowitz was born and raised in New York City and moved to Winston-Salem in 1979 after two years in the nation's capital, working at the Washington Post. He spent three years as a reporter and columnist for the Winston-Salem Journal before joining the public relations department at R.J. Reynolds Industries in 1982. His career with Reynolds has included a two-year assignment in Santa Fe, N.M., and he is currently director of communications for RAI Services Company.
Moskowitz is a member of Artworks Gallery, Associated Artists of Winston-Salem and The Muddy River Art Association. His work has appeared in national juried art exhibits and is often displayed in galleries and community exhibits in and around Winston-Salem, including the Sawtooth School for Visual Art’s gallery and shop.
