Alix Hitchcock: "Flying, Swimming, Landing" and
Kimberly Varnadoe: "Somebody's Memories"

September 28 - November 1, 2014
Meet the Artists: Sunday, October 19, 2 – 4 pm
Gallery Hop, October 3, 7 – 10 pm

Artworks Gallery presents two artists: Alix Hitchcock’s "Flying, Swimming, Landing", with gelatin monotypes using imagery of birds and water creatures, and "Somebody’s Memories”, works by Kimberly Varnadoe using photography based imagery invoking memories and nostalgia.

AlightAlix Hitchcock’s current colorful art on paper works are gelatin monotype prints with the themes of water, land, and air using silhouette shapes of dancers, acrobats, birds, sea animals, dragonflies, herons, etc. They are created by printing on hand-made “gelatin plates” using cut- out shapes as stencils with water-based printmaking inks, some with additional hand coloring. Hitchcock wants to communicate with the viewer a sense of awe in the presence of Nature, and bring the viewer into each artwork’s world of movement and mystery.

Hitchcock received her MA in painting from New York University in 1983, and her BFA in printmaking and painting from the Univ. of NC at Greensboro in 1973. She was an Instructor in Drawing at WFU for 23 years. Alix Hitchcock was the Winston-Salem Artist of the Year in 1998, and is a founding board member of Artworks Gallery. She has exhibited in N.C., Virginia, Wyoming, and New York City. Hitchcock is in many private collections as well as public collections. Hitchcock’s art has been published in two textbooks: A Guide to Drawing, Eighth Edition by David Faber, (Thomson Wadsworth), and Digital Art, Its Art and Science by Yue-Ling Wong, (Prentice Hall).

Attic DoorwayKimberly Varnadoe works with experimental photography, including Polaroid emulsion lifts, acrylic gel medium transfers, film and digital processes with a variety of mixed media techniques. Her imagery is inspired by the nostalgic theme of times past, lost and abandoned spaces and fleeting memories. She begins with images of places and events that evoke sentimental, nostalgic thoughts and builds on these personal experiences in order to share these memories with her audience. She says “I am fascinated how each person can experience the same event or place, yet remember it quite differently.”

Varnadoe received her BFA in Painting from the University of South Alabama and her MFA in Printmaking from the University of Memphis. She has been teaching college since 1986 and is currently Associate Professor of Art and Chair of the Art Department at Salem College in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. She has exhibited extensively in the region and was invited and participated in her first international exhibition in Shanghai, China in the spring of 2012. During the summer of 2012 she traveled to Lviv, Ukraine and conducted a Polaroid Emulsion Lift workshop to a group of artists at the 5 x 5 Gallery. She has been a member of Artworks Gallery since 2003.

The exhibit is free and open to the public.
